Many notables attended, but one of the real eye-catchers were the Keystone bombers of the 20th Bomb Squadron from Langley Field, VA. The lead ship was christened “Miss Columbia SC” by Miss Clara-Ellen Owens, daughter of mayor L.B. Owens. Hizzoner’s name was later given to the airport itself, and remains in use to this day.
Geoff,
I am glad you enjoyed those photos. Alas, those are the only ones relating to the Columbia Airport dedication. As for Major Dargue, can you identify him in the photos?
If I find more photos of Dargue, I’ll be sure to post them. I have tens of thousands of old aviation photos, so something is bound to turn up. Thanks for looking!
Wow tens of thousands of old photo’s! My main interest is in the jacket he
wearing. It could be an early prototype of the A2 flight jacket but there is not enough detail
in the photo to be sure,
Recently it has come to light that there are previously unknown versions of the A2 jacket from
about 1930, 31, 32, 33. So looking for photo’s that might help to identify these jackets. Known.
wearers are Hap Arnold, Carl Spatz and Ross Hoyt.
Having looked at these photo’s again and did some searching I found out that SC Gov Blackwood, who is labeled and seen in the photo’s, was Gov from Jan 1931 to Jan 1935.
Which means that the photo’s are not from 1930.
My best guess is that the occasion is the one year anniversary of the dedication in April 1931.
Geoff,
Good catch. Perhaps the photos were captioned later, when Blackwood (by then) was Gov? Or, they are simply misdated. I’ll have to dig out the originals and see.
Thanks!
Hello
Nice photo’s of the Columbia dedication. Are there any more? Of particular interest are photo’s of Major Dargue.
