The dedication of the Columbia South Carolina Municipal Airport in 1930

img910img909img913img911Many notables attended, but one of the real eye-catchers were the Keystone bombers of the 20th Bomb Squadron from Langley Field, VA.  The lead ship was christened “Miss Columbia SC” by Miss Clara-Ellen Owens, daughter of mayor L.B. Owens.  Hizzoner’s name was later given to the airport itself, and remains in use to this day.

  1. Hello
Nice photo’s of the Columbia dedication. Are there any more? Of particular interest are photo’s of Major Dargue.

  2. Wow tens of thousands of old photo’s! My main interest is in the jacket he
wearing. It could be an early prototype of the A2 flight jacket but there is not enough detail
in the photo to be sure,

Recently it has come to light that there are previously unknown versions of the A2 jacket from
about 1930, 31, 32, 33. So looking for photo’s that might help to identify these jackets. Known.
wearers are Hap Arnold, Carl Spatz and Ross Hoyt.
