A Visit To “The Aviation Field, Galveston”

A pair of classy dames, a bunch of Curtiss A-3 attack planes.

Judging by the cheery captions scribbled in this scrapbook, when these two lovely Texas ladies paid a call on the Air Corps, they received the royal treatment from airmen of the 3rd Attack Group. The location is listed as Galveston’s “Aviation Field,” but the 3rd Attack Group was stationed at nearby Fort Crockett, which had its own flying field, so the photos may have been taken there.

The men who charmed these ladies are listed as “Wade Ciphon” and “Lieutenant Flock, Army Air Corps”. That would most likely be Sergeant Paul Wade Ciphon and Lieutenant Julius Theodore Flock, both listed at the time (circa 1930) as stationed with the 3rd Attack. (Flock’s name is painted on the plane seen on the left in the first photo)
