“West Point of the Air”

img531 - Copyimg533 - Copy

This classic was filmed at Randolph Field in 1934.  Promising “‘Contact’ for Thrills”, and “‘Happy Landings’ for Romance”, the film, starring Wallace Beery, was popular and profitable.

Boeing B-9

img281 - Copy

When the Boeing B-9 went aloft in 1931, it was one speedy airplane.  Its top speed of almost 200 MPH equaled or bettered that of the pursuit planes who vainly tried to intercept it.  Within a year or two, it was eclipsed by the Martin B-10, but the B-9 had now set the standard for all future bomber and pursuit aircraft.

The CO-1

A somewhat tricky plane to pin down. Though built by the Engineering Division at Wright Field, the CO-1 here was actually a design by Edson Fessenden Gallaudet. (That name is on the tail)

BT-2

scan0111 - Copy

Air Corps pilots trade their BT-2 cockpits for the saddle.  Might have been the first time they rode a horse, and probably the first time the horses had a close look at an airplane.

That lower strut wasn’t just to keep the wings where you want them; it was an airfoil.  Aircraft carries the “FAD” arrowhead of the Fairfield Air Depot where it was overhauled.

Keystone Bombers

scan0113scan0117scan0116scan0119

Keystone built a plethora of bombers for the Air Corps in the 1920’s and 30’s. While nothing earth shattering in the advancement stage, they were solid performers and mirrored the world’s other bombers of the time.

Inside the engine nacelle of the XB-15. The engines could be accessed in flight, and the nacelle interior seems roomy enough. Note the oil can mounted lower right. Manufactured by Brookins, its stamped “Two Gallons”.
